Beach Labyrinth Guide

Guerrilla WorshipAfter the Guerrilla Worship Beach Labyrinth, we thought it may be useful to share some of our thoughts on the design and setting up to maybe encourage others to have a go.

Regarding the situation of the labyrinth, we chose a section of the beach with a decent quality of sand (not too loose so the markings would be dificult to see) and close enough to the promenade so passers-by could see what was happening (and maybe join us).

It took 3 of us around 90 minutes to set it up. We'd already prepared a marking stick to measure the lengths and help guide us with the circles. This consisted of a piece of wood (part of a broom handle) with a (32 metre) length of string wound round. Every 2 metres it had a (5cm) loop in the string (to enable another stick to be poked into the hole to score the sand). We also took with us a hoe-type tool (similar to this), which we used to define the markings more clearly and a rake for marking the larger areas (a small trowl would've also been handy for digging the holes for the laminated reflections).

The first thing we then did was to mark out the first inner circle (nearest the centre), with an 8 metres radius. After defining a suitable centre point, one person held the marking stick in the centre and one of us popped another stick into the 8m loop and walked round, scoring the sand (leaving space for the entry points in the design). Our third hand then followed with the hoe.

Design-wise, the measurements were based around the 2 metre wide path, so each of the circles were fairly easy to mark out using the marking stick and string. When it came to the boxes around the outside, we unwound the string and guessed at the perpendiculars, but it was fairly easy and quick to do - lastly marking the 32 metre outside box.
The inner cross was 2 metres wide and consisted of 4m arms and top and a 10 metre lower section, so it was 16 metres high.

A couple of extra helpers then raked the sand and helped to bury the reflections (we used 2 laminates for each inner station and one for the intros). You may have already found the links, but the reflections can be downloaded in our resources section. 'Holy Ground' was outside of the labyrinth (where the shoes were), the Welcome was at the entrance and the 5 others were in the 4 raked zones with 'Washed away' in the cross.

If you feel inspired and fancy having a go, it'd be great to hear any feedback.
