Lent - Day 7: Seven Items of Praise
Written by Andy Wain

Those in management will know that when doing an evaluation with an employee anything which could be seen as criticism needs to be surrounded by praise. Someone concluded that any hint of criticism needs to be balanced with seven positive comments. For some reason we are more ready to hear negative comments than positive ones.

What can you do today to become more receptive to complements and praise so they have a greater impact on you?

I was just walking back from the bus stop thinking about how sensitive my 9 & 11 year old daughters are to criticism from me and how I need to see my words from their perspective.

Instead of always noticing and commenting only in a negative way, maybe we should make a point of looking out for, noticing, and encouraging someone for things they do that might normally go un noticed and usually with no thanks. eg I found out that a lady had volunteered for years to clean the church toilets, it wasnt her 'job' and she didnt get any pay for it, she just saw it as a way she could practically serve the church. Not many people would have volunteered to do this I think, she didnt seek thanks but its good to notice and thank people.
Sometimes also I think we can be quite negative and are quick to speak up when things arent to our personal taste, and really need to practice encouraging more. (Im not pointing the finger, and I know I need to focus more on the positive)
