Lent - Day 3: A Life Sacrificed for Yours!
Written by Andy Wain

"Mr Griffiths, 27, has told friends how his [parachute] instructor, Michael Costello, repeatedly shouted "Hey man, I'm sorry" to him as the pair hurtled towards the ground at speeds of 120 mph [their chute had failed]. Mr Costello, who saved the Briton's life by deliberately cushioning his fall, died on impact." (Independent Newspaper website, 1997)

How would you feel or respond if someone did that for you; guilt, thankful, frightened...?

I'd feel a bit of all three I think! I imagine that I would be determined to make the very best of myself too. If somebody had given up their life so that I could have mine, I would want to make the very best of things so that they're sacrifice wouldn't be wasted. But I've got to be honest, I don't relate that easily to the notion that Jesus 'gave up his life for me', it's just not the same thing. That has no bearing on my human lifespan. I'm not totally dissing the notion, but to me, the analogy doesn't make deep-down sense.

BTW- I'm not critising the reflection either- it's thought-provoking. What do others think we mean when we say 'Jesus died for our sins'? After fifteen years in Welsh chapels and fifteen in the CoE, I'm well versed in the usual rationale. But what does it REALLY mean, here and now? What does it mean aside from the promise of an afterlife? 'Believe this or you'll rot in hell for eternity' really hacks me off. At best that's a pretty selfish reason for going with anything!!!

I understand where you're coming from Beth. I don't like the term "dying for our sins" too much either, as the way people use this term sometimes is a little clichey.
I try to understand it, though, by actually thinking about it in a similar way to the parachute story. Not everybody is the same obviously but I am a constant worrier which has led to many health problems in my life. Praying and studying the bible really helps me stay calm and keeps my anxieties at bay. I kind of think if I went too far down the route of anxiety and stress I would do bad things to myself, so I think that, although its not direct like in the story that God is saving my life.
