our dream - by richard w

Last Sunday, Dream (Haydock) met to hear news about my new job and get an update on where the five Dream groups in the network are up to. We then spent most of the time discussing our own hopes and yearnings about what this thing we’re a part of might become.

I kicked that off by sharing my heart. I felt pretty vulnerable doing so because it came after a period of trying to listen ‘between the lines’ to what others were looking for and reflecting and journaling about my own desires. I had tried to ruthlessly edit out everything that I’d written down just because it sounded good, or seemed as though it ‘ought’ to be there. I ended up with something that didn’t sound terrible impressive or unique. But it is as true a snapshot of my heart as I can give and it’s a starter which I hope others will resonate with, disagree with, add to and take from. I think we started that process well on Sunday. It would be great if that could continue in different forms, among some of the other groups and also here. As each one of use takes the risk of articulating our own version of ‘my dream’ it can become ‘our dream’.

Please add your comments (just click on comments below), whether you’re part of Dream or able to give an outsider’s perspective.

my dream

I want to be part of a community that I love and that loves me.
A place where we get past the polite niceness, beyond the pretence and the masks, and get really irritated with each other. And then stick at it, and stick together.

I want to be part of something that is marked by its welcome, its hospitality and its inclusiveness.
A place with fuzzy edges, where no one decides who belongs and is ‘in’ or ‘out’.

I want to be part of a group of people who are obsessed with Jesus, rather than Christianity.
A place that is passionately focussed on Jesus and learning to live as followers of his way in real life today. A place where we’re becoming more like Jesus as we learn the ancient spiritual disciplines and work together to make them part of our lives.

I want to belong to a community where I can be myself, warts and all.
A place that, on the one hand will accept me as I am right now, but on the other hand will provoke and inspire me to become more of what I could be. A place where my brokenness and fears and habits are part of the process. A place where we hold on to the ‘ideal’ but also celebrate the ‘real’.

I want to be part of something that treats people like adults.
A place that values everyone’s experience and perspective. A place where people are motivated by love rather than guilt.

I want to be part of a community that is both of our culture, so that it connects with the language and images and music and experiences of everyday life. But one that also goes against the grain of our culture because we serve one another and live sacrificially and cross boundaries of class and age and colour.
A place that makes the difference in the things that feel too big for us as individuals. Whether that’s the hassle my kids will get when they can’t wear designer trainers or the impotence I feel in the face of ethical and environmental issues.
A place that makes us yearn for justice and beauty. A place that equips us for life in the worlds we live in, and gives us the fire we need to change them.

A new appointment for the Dream Network!

Exciting News....

After much negotiation, we've got our man! From September Richard White, a founder member of Dream in Haydock, will be working half-time as pastor to the Dream Network.

As the network has grown to five groups (with others possibly on stream) there has been a similarly growing need for someone with the time to coordinate the network, encourage new groups as they join and help exisiting groups to develop. Richard puts it this way here...

"My role will partly be to help the network continue to spread. At the same time, as the number of people for whom Dream is their only Christian community increases, I'll be mentoring existing groups in exploring how to address issues such as pastoral care, discipleship, all-age involvement, etc in ways that reflect our values and ethos."

Well put, Richard!

The other half of Richard's job is really exciting too, and will fit well with the Dream job; even plugging the network in to a national agenda! You can read more about that here and here.

The past four and a half years of the Dream journey have been amazing - here's to what comes next!
